 OVERVIEW

Buddhism, founded by Siddhartha Gautama (the Buddha) in the 5th century BCE in the eastern Gangetic plains of India, spread across Asia following the Buddha’s parinirvana. Born in Lumbini (present-day Nepal) and attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya, the Buddha passed away at Kushinagara, India at the age of 80. His teachings, carried by monks and travelers along the Silk Route, reached Central Asia, China, Korea, Japan, and beyond.

Present-day Pakistan holds some of the world’s most important Buddhist archaeological treasures. Under Emperor Ashoka in the 3rd century BCE, Buddhism flourished here, and the Gandhara Civilization became a global center of Mahayana Buddhism.
Taxila, Peshawar, and Swat Valley emerged as hubs of learning, meditation, and art. Gandharan sculptures—representing a unique blend of Greek, Persian, and Buddhist artistic traditions—left an enduring legacy admired worldwide.

Discovery Pakistan, with 25+ years of experience, offers authentic and spiritually enriching pilgrimage tours. From chanting sessions to meditation in sacred valleys, this itinerary is designed for deep cultural, historical, and spiritual immersion.
